January 2, 2009 First Friday Trolley Hop

Make a resolution to get downtown for the First Friday Trolley Hop on January 2 and visit the shops and galleries you’ve never been to before.
Opening January 2nd at Pyro Gallery is an exhibition of work by Pyro member Shawn Marshall, as well as members of the sculpture organization ENID.
Shawn Marshall is a mixed media artist who has worked primarily in sculpture over the last 10 years. Her architectural background has an influence in her work in form and materiality. Her most recent works are paintings which attempt to transform the canvas into a three dimensional surface; incorporating applied media and manipulating the canvas itself.
Along with Pyro Gallery, Shawn is also a member of ENID; an organization of Louisville area women sculptors that formed in January of 1998. It is named in honor of Enid Yandell, Kentucky's first woman sculptor who was at the peak of her career over a hundred years ago. Her achievements were great at a time when it was extremely difficult for a woman to succeed in the field. Enid will be participating in the exhibition with Shawn Marshall.
This exhibition reflects the achievements of women artists, all working with serious intent within the Louisville community; and investigates our diversity of style, medium, and content, for we span several generations and schools of thought. The exhibition will run through February 14th; the opening reception will be held January 9th from 5pm to 9pm.Work by Pyro members is also on display right now at Actors Theatre of Louisville. The show, Pyro at Five, is a celebration of Pyro's fifth anniversary and features work by all twenty-two Pyro members. The exhibition will be on display through January 25th.

The Art of Experience: Fluxus Works from the Collection of Michael Lowe
November 7, 2008 – January 3, 2009

The exhibition will feature over 60 exemplary Fluxus pieces owned by Cincinnati art collector Michael Lowe. Fluxus was a dynamic network of international visual artists, composers, and poets who collaborated beginning in the early 1960s. They created individual and collective artworks that emphasized elements of chance, economy (both in materials and presentation), experiential engagement, humor, play, and a democratization of media that combined poetry, theater, music, and art. Out of these interests, Fluxus artists invented such forms as the Event score and Fluxkit multiples, in addition to the terms Concept Art and Intermedia. The working dates for the most prominent activity by original Fluxus artists are 1962-1978, and their work has influenced everything from conceptual art and mail art to performance and postmodernism. Founding Fluxus artists continue to create, perform, and publish to this very day, inspiring new generations of artists who have unabashedly adopted the Fluxus name and its principles. Fluxus artists represented in the exhibition include: Yoko Ono, George Brecht, George Maciunas, Bob Watts, Takako Saito, Robert Filliou, Ben Vautier, Henry Flynt, Nam June Paik, Ay-O, and Wolf Vostell.
New Year’s Resolutions: a Glassblowing Demonstration by Rebekah Davis and Ben Phalen

Louisville Glassworks (in the Hotshop), 815. West Market (502.584.4510) 1st Friday, January 2nd 6pm-9pm, FREE
About the Demo:
For the January First Friday Trolley Hop, Glassworks proudly presents a hot glass demonstration
By Rebekah Davis and Ben Phalen. The glassblowing couple will be making two objects commonly featured in New Year's resolutions: a cigarette, for those who haven't yet kicked the habit; and a cupcake, for those who want to eat more healthfully.
About the Artists:

Rebekah Davis and Ben Phelan are a glassblowing couple who got their start as glass artists after a chance encounter with a glassblowing studio while on vacation. Upon returning home which, at the time was Manhattan, they enrolled in an introductory course at Urban Glass, a public studio in Brooklyn, taught by Lindsay Jochets. Within a few months they had been hired on as teaching assistants at Urban Glass, and continued their glass education working under and taking private instruction from a number of New York-based artists. They moved to Louisville in the winter of 2008.
About the Process & Technique:

In both demos, they will be using bright, cartoonish colors and employing a technique called incalmo, which involves the joining together of two or more bubbles to create a single object. In the case of the cigarette, the brown filter tip and the white shaft will initially be formed separately, then joined together and finished with a red "coal" from which a trail of opaline "smoke" will rise. For the cupcake, a yellow "cup" will be stuffed into an optic mold, imparting a ribbed pattern. The pink "cake" will be joined with the cup and surmounted by a red "cherry."
