February 1, 2008 First Friday Trolley Hop

There is so much going on at the February Trolley Hop that you will want to begin early. In honor of Black History Month, three galleries are holding exceptional exhibits -- E&S Gallery always features the world's most renowned African American Artists, and this month features the ribbon cutting of the Jacob Lawrnece Collection. The Frazier showcases African drum music as well as African stilt dancers this month. The Gallery at Actors Theatre is holding their 14th annual African American Art Exhibition.
Details about other gallery happenings are below. If you need a map, click here.

If you decide to stay after the Hop and eat at one of downtown's restaurants, please consider patronizing our sponsors: The Jazz Factory, The Mayan Cafe, The Bristol, The Bodega, Felice Vineyards, Park Place on Main, Brownings, RIVUE or Jockey Silks Club at the Galt House.

If this was forwarded to you by a friend, sign up here to receive your own Hop e-news every month so you don't miss out on what's coming up next month.

Tangled Up In You: Connecting, Coexisting, and Conceiving Identity
Opening February 1st. The multi-stranded threads of family and romance that wind their way through each of our lives are explored, celebrated, and interrogated in the 21c Museum Foundation’s current exhibition. From Louise Bourgeois’s searing childhood drama to Bill Henson’s provocative, mysterious vision of young love, to Will Ryman’s sculptural staging of an interminable Family Dinner, these works examine the tension, the tenderness, and the inescapability of our most essential relationships. We are born connected to others, as Max Streicher’s Trio in a Box so poignantly illustrates. The struggle to create a unique self fosters an endless cycle of attraction and repulsion, of defining and denying boundaries at once.Using a variety of mediums such as sculpture, photography, painting, printmaking, and video, the works in this exhibition offer us an unashamed glimpse of the bonds of family and loved ones that are embedded within us. Displaying an unfamiliar or sometimes disturbing insight into ways both groups and individuals communicate, these artists allow us to marvel at our own hindrances and uniqueness that make us undeniably human.

Gallery NuLu, 632 East Market, Second Floor
Gallery NuLu announces the February exhibition of Christopher Hauck’s Identity Crisis.
Opening: February 1st, 2008 from 5-8 pm
Through: March 1st, 2008

Atlanta-based, Louisville native Christopher Hauck brings his UPC-coded commentary on modern identity to his hometown for the first time. The exhibition arrives in Louisville after exhibitions in Atlanta, Berlin, Los Angeles, and London and will travel to Chicago and Boston later in 2008.
The Identity Crisis series explores the commoditization of identity, the person as product, the branding of ‘me’. Hauck comments, “I am a product, in the General Mills or Procter & Gamble sense, of the first generation hyper- consumers. We live in a perpetually cycling, highly mediated
environment where identities are constructed, broadcast, adopted, and discarded at mega-bit speeds. Through these influences my work attempts to investigate the shifting cultural norms influenced by consumerism and hyper- mediation.”
