Flame Run Art Glass Studio,
828 E. Market Street

Flame Run contemporary art glass studio will celebrate the Beatles in “Twist and Shout,” an exhibit that will open the weekend of Abbey Road on the River and run through July 25. Flame Run co-owner Brook Forrest White Jr. said the idea for the exhibit came to him when he realized the Beatles’ song “Twist and Shout” could be about glass blowing. “Glass blowing is about action, motion and vitality,” White said. “When you blow glass, you are constantly twisting and turning the blow pipe.” The show includes work by John Miller, of Champaign, Ill., as well as these artists from Louisville: Eoin Breadon, Matt Randy, Casey McMains, White and Flame Run co-owner Susie Slabaugh White. White said the art reflects the artists’ diverse response to the show’s theme. “Some pieces have been inspired by Beatles songs and other pieces are simply representative of song titles,” said White, who noted that the show includes a yellow submarine and a silver hammer, a reference to "Maxwell's Silver Hammer,” a song from the Abbey Road album.

Flame Run also will be hosting members of Women 4 Women that night , which is a local non-profit organization. ( www.w4w.com ) They will have a table set up with information about their organization and the upcoming Champions 4 Her 5k Walk, Run and Festival, taking place on June 21st.

Additionally, Susie Slabaugh-White will be doing a glass blowing demonstration, and the piece will be live auctioned off as a donation to their organization.

Need something to put you in the mood for the Beijing Olympics? The Hite Art Institute presents:Revolutionary Voices: Cultural Revolution Posters from the Crane House,
May 16 – June 28, 2008. Like many ideological movements, the Chinese Cultural Revolution, launched by Chairman Mao in 1966, was promoted with imagery that idealized, rather than reflected, the effects of the policies and practices of its leaders. “Revolutionary Voices: Cultural Revolution Posters from the Crane House” features thirty-eight posters printed during this period and collected by Helen Lang, the founder of The Crane House, Asia Institute, Louisville’s Asian cultural center.

The exhibit provides historical context for the work and identifies stylistic templates now being appropriated by contemporary Chinese artists as relevant sources for their own art. Curated by Youn Ju Yu, Master’s Thesis Candidate, Critical and Curatorial Studies, Hite Art Institute, University of Louisville. Exhibition Programs on the Chinese Cultural Revolution include a Documentary Film Screening of “To Live” Sat., June 14, 2 p.m.

Pyro Gallery, 624 W. Main Street
Louisville artist/photographer John Fitzgerald in partnership with several charities and individual sponsors is exhibiting Hanging Together, a series of photographic portraits at Pyro Gallery, 624 West Main Street in downtown Louisville. This exhibit is included in the First Friday Trolley Hop! Visitor Joe Phelps, pastor of Highland Baptist Church, said, "The portraits provide a rare opportunity to examine unhurriedly the faces of strangers and to recognize the beauty of each life. Something about the stillness of the pictures allowed me to see graphically the unity of all people."Visitor Alice Vardiman said, "I was aware of how much I had enjoyed such a wonderful artistic event but I was also aware that it was a profoundly spiritual experience and that I had been standing on Holy ground." It was an installation I could really feel in my heart." - Dortha FazioFitzgerald describes Hanging Together as "a unique documentary approach to poverty and exclusion." The exhibit includes captivating, soulful, black and white portraits of individuals from both sides of the socioeconomic tracks. Eloquent detail and monochromatic intimacy is comforting, yet the depth of the reality and inequity is, at the same time, heartbreaking. The artist claims, "The diversity represented in this exhibit challenges the viewer to look upon each of the individual subjects through a divine lens, that is, one of absolute equality. "More details about this exhibit are available at the web site:

Gallery NuLu, 632 East Market Street, #2
Gallery NuLu proudly announce their latest show, “Enough is Enough”, a collaborative effort from Louisville-based artists Jacob Heustis and Thea Lura!
Opening: June 6th, 2008 Through: June 28th, 2008
At first glance the gallery appears completely empty, but further inspection reveals that each inch of the space has been tediously tended to. By using traditional materials and obsessive markmaking, the artists attempt to transform the gallery space into a sculpture of its own.Heustis's raw and bratty approach is loaded with detailed documentation of process and time. Often sparse and with a sense of immediacy, his work has become increasingly self-referential.Lura's work deals with how we imbue objects with meaning and how these objects change in significance without physically changing. In 2007 she was awarded an Artist Enrichment Grant from the Kentucky Foundation for Women, and her most recent project Now Is Not Enough is showing at the New Center for Contemporary Art.Both artists have exhibited their work in group and solo shows. This is their first collaborative show together.
