The Green Building Gallery, 732 E. Market St.
Sarah Lyon Debuts New Work wi th Solo Show
Opening: July 3rd, 2009 5-9pm Through: August 28th, 2009
The Green Building Gallery is pleased to present a
series of new work by local photographer Sarah Lyon. Debuting material
prepared in 2009, the show features both black and white and color
photography but goes beyond to explore bronze casting and installation.
Lyon’s fourth solo show in Louisville has her exploring everything from her
city and country to the local Goodwill and a nearby foundry. Inspiration
came from a challenge she gave herself to overcome distracting habits that
had infringed upon her art making in the past. “It’s amazing how productive I
realized I can be when every evening is not taken up by drinking,” says Lyon.
Lyon explored the lost wax casting process with a piece titled "30,000
Miles", a bronze casting of her old motorcycle boots which she wore
throughout four cross-country motorcycle journeys starting in the summer
of 2003. “During those motorcycle trips I pursued photography projects that
established my identity as an artist. To express the enduring, personal
influence of those journeys I created a manifestation to outlast me”, Lyon
says of the piece. In another subject, Lyon hung a large map of Louisville on
the wall and threw darts to determine where she would go to photograph.
The result is a grid of 50 black and white photographs taken around the city.
In deciding how to frame this project, she created “Somewhere Over the
Framebow”, a contemporary assemblage of white-painted picture frames,
ranging from whimsical to the ordinary, in which she explores feelings of
nostalgia, emptiness, curiosity and playfulness.
The group of work will also include four large color prints of spaces around
Louisville, a continuation of her “Louisville Portraits and Landscapes” series.
Lyon was born in Louisville and received her BFA from Miami University of
Ohio. Her self published 2007, 2008 and 2009 Female Mechanics Calendars
have received great response in the United States and internationally as the
first of their kind. Her work has also been published in Esquire, Hutch,
Trespass, Sustain, Bejeezus, Truckers News, Urban Moto, BMW Owners
News, Curve, Today's Woman, and Louisville Magazine. Lyon lives and works
in Smoketown and teaches black and white photography at Bellarmine
University.

PYRO Gallery. 624 West Main St, will be open from 11am-9pm Friday, August 7th for the First Friday Trolley Hop.
Keith Auerbach’s “Illusion of Certainty” is currently on exhibit at PYRO Gallery, 624 West Main Street, , as part of the Louisville Photo Biennial and Visual Art Festival. The exhibit, which opened July 10th, will remain on display until August 15, 2009.
Auerbach is known for his award-winning black and white photographs of people and animals, such as those currently on exhibit in Weber Gallery’s “Art From the Heart.” In “Illusion of Certainty,” however, Auerbach uses colorful, abstract images to address the emotions and feelings central to his art-making. As the artist explains, “I make visible that which is invisible [… ] the secrets of our hearts.” While the artist intends to invoke feelings of empathy, kindness, vulnerability and acceptance in viewers, he purposefully keeps his iconography and titles abstracted so that the viewer is encouraged to construct their personal meanings of each piece.
Apart from these two simultaneous solo exhibitions, the artist’s photography can be found in the Guilda Club of Louisville’s permanent collection, and in The Photographic Humor0 of Keith Auerbach (which received both the Book of the Year award from the Independent Publisher’s Association and The International Photography Awards/Lucie Award). The book is available for sale at PYRO Gallery throughout the exhibition. |

8th Annual Kentucky Art Car Weekend, August 6 - 8, 2009
The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, with support from the International Contemporary Art Foundation, will host the 8th Annual Kentucky Art Car Weekend from Thursday, August 6 through Saturday, August 8, 2009. Art Car guru Harrod Blank will bring 3 cars from Art Car World, a museum he founded in Arizona that is dedicated entirely to the celebration and preservation of this popular mobile art form, and give a lecture about his most recent film Automorphosis. The event will showcase over 40 art cars in total from around the country, including the world famous Camera Van and the California Fantasy Van.
The weekend will kick off with a drive-in movie at the Waterfront Wharf, located next to Joe’s Crab Shack, on Thursday, August 6th beginning at 7:00pm. Several cars will be on display as the Wharf will become a full-fledged drive-in movie theatre, complete with a concession stand and a radio transmitted sound. The feature film, Automorphosis, will begin at 9:00pm.
Beginning at 9:00am on Friday, August 7th, art cars from around the country will arrive and park along the 700 block of West Main Street. The cars will remain on display through the First Friday Trolley Hop for a block party that includes an art car wig contest, artist demonstrations and live music by DJ Jason Clark. At 9:00pm the cars will go on an illuminated cruise to Lynn’s Paradise Café, located at 984 Barret Avenue.
At 9:00am on Saturday morning, the cars will return to the 700 and 800 blocks of West Main Street where the block party continues. The public is invited to vote for their favorite art car, and from 10:00am-1:00pm the Museum will host a free workshop where children can build their own mini art car. At noon, Harrod Blank and Bonnie Blue will give lectures in the Street Gallery at the Museum. Beginning at 2:00pm, the cars will embark on the art car parade, traveling down Market Street to Bardstown Road, circling the Douglass Loop and then culminating in the parking lot of the Bardstown Road Presbyterian Church where they will remain on display until 5:00pm.
A Barn Dance will be held in the lot behind 21C beginning at 6:00pm on Saturday with live music from The Smacks, The Flying Carpets and Ultra Pulvarize. A dinner buffet will be provided by Proof and available to the public for $$$. The party is free and open to the public.
The Kentucky Art Car Weekend is sponsored by the International Contemporary Art Foundation, 4th District Council Member David Tandy, Louisville Metro Government, the Main Street Association, Heine Brothers Coffee, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Joe’s Crab Shack, the Waterfront Development Corporation, and Lynn’s Paradise Café.

21c Museum Shop August Featured Artist: Kelli Pope
Kentucky native Kelli Pope may have defected to Southern Indiana, but her inspired jewelry designs are sure to make Louisvillians claim her as our own. Interested in a variety of artistic pursuits from a very young age, the love of making jewelry started rather unglamorously: laboring to repair a flawed store-bought piece. Inspired by her newfound talent, that single piece fueled a desire to create affordable, artistic jewelry. Pope's pieces continue to evolve as she perfects her craft with new metal smith techniques and creative designs. Each piece is one of a kind, and custom orders are welcomed. Meet the artist during Trolley Hop, Friday, August 7, 2009 from 5pm-9pm.

New Exhibition at Proof on Main: Greg Gossel, Recent Work
Currently on display in the second dining room (aka "The Goat Room") of Proof on Main is recent work by Minneapolis-based artist Greg Gossel. Using a combination of silkscreen technique, collage, and other mixed media, Gossel appropriates pop culture images and symbolism collected from old comic books, magazines, newspapers, and paperbacks. Said Gossel during a mid-2009 exhibition, "many of the pieces incorporate this ongoing theme of a fall from grace, pieces of our collective history which were not the storybook endings that are so often portrayed in mass media." ------
