Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, 715 W. Main St., will celebrate the Day of the Dead holiday by hosting a public altar from October 26th through November 2nd, 2007. On November 2nd, from 5-9pm in conjunction with the First Friday Trolley Hop, the Museum will host concluding festivities that will include food, live music from Marlon Obando, a sugar skull contest, fire dancers, face painting, puppets, art cars and a candle lit march. Guests are encouraged to attend wearing costumes and masks.
The altar is being installed in the third floor education center lobby. Members of the public are encouraged to bring items to build a community altar in honor of loved ones who have passed away. These altars typically contain pictures of those relatives who have passed, flowers, food, candy, etc.
The KMAC Gallery Shop will be featuring artwork for sale that is themed around the Day of the Dead holiday, including a selection of works by Geoff Carr and Danny Dutton. The Geoff Carr images are from his Day of Dead Series, and the complete show of those works will be on display at Carr + Waite Studios during the trolley hop. Danny Dutton’s pieces, inspired by the traditional tissue paper garlands made during the Day of the Dead celebration, are hand cut, framed skeleton paper cuts that he created using surgical scissors. He will also be featuring skeleton themed paintings.
The Museum is also hosting an altar making workshop on Saturday, October 27th from 12-3pm. In the workshop, led by Jacque Parsley, students will create their own shrine to someone or something that is important to them. An assortment of unique items will be provided, and students are encouraged to bring small mementos to make it extra personal. The cost is $45, and space is limited. Call Dane Waters at (502) 589-0155 x 208 for reservations.

Paul Paletti Gallery, 713 East Market Street, is pleased to present “The Classic and the Spiritual: Photographs by John Wimberley.” The exhibition will be on display from September 1- November 30, 2007. John Wimberley was born in Padget, Bermuda in 1945, and grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. He began photographing flight operations over Vietnam while serving in the Navy. Following his return, he devoted himself to color street and landscape photography before a profound experience photographing trees in Canyon del Puerto, California in 1969 influenced him to pursue black and white imagery. After this experience, and the shift of medium and thought, he sought to create in his photographs the spiritual world exclusively. He began a long-term study of Jungian psychology, shamanism and spiritual disciplines. In the mid-1970’s, Wimberley helped rekindle interest in certain black and white processing techniques used by several of the masters of photography in the 1920’s- 1930’s. In 1983, Wimberley had the first of two, two-man exhibitions with Ansel Adams, signaling the beginning of a steady rise in critical acclaim.

^ "Expressive Arms Series" ^
Sharon Weis' figures in the exhibition express themselves with their arms in a way that goes beyond the everyday social norm in order to evoke unnamable emotions. Though the expressions are not communicated on a level that involves words or labels, they suggest a visual understanding that has its own vocabulary. The figures are painted with oil on board.

"Unoccupied Chair Series"
Also on exhibit by Sharon Weis are a series of chair paintings. The chairs are in conversation with each other, and are meant to draw attention to the missing occupants.

Vadis Turner brings her tongue-in-cheek take on tradition versus modernity to Louisville from New York City. Many traditional forms of craft have been replaced with advancements in technology, entertainment and shifts in cultural priorities. Vadis Turner transforms concepts and materials that are traditionally emblematic of women into objects that represent how we spend our time and define our values. A Nashville native, Ms. Turner studied at Boston University, earning her BFA and MFA and graduating with honors in 2000.
Boasting an impressive exhibition catalog, Turner has shown in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, and Nashville, as well as abroad, in Tokyo, the Czech Republic, as well as Paris’ Centre Georges Pompidou and Reflex Gallery.
“It is hard to miss… Vadis Turner’s eye-fooling collection of confection and cupcakes made of colored cloth and assorted beauty products. They are very cleverly done.” (Benjamin Genocchio, The New York Times, April 2007)
“What gives substance to her art, however, is the tension it sets up between old-timey, timeintensive crafts associated with women- which she celebrates – and references to the modern, time-crunched, consumer oriented world.” (Ben Davis, Retro Activities, artnet.com)
This show was made possible through collaboration with New York’s Vanina Holasek Gallery.
Please join us to celebrate and enjoy Vadis Turner’s first Louisville exhibition! |
