The Green Building Gallery, 732 E. Market St., announces a new show with a philosophy profoundly aligned with its own;
Julia Christensen’s ‘Big Box Reuse’.
Opening: December 5t h , 2008 5- 9 pm Thr o ugh : J a n u a r y 3 0 t h , 2 0 0 9
When you move out of your house, there’s usually someone eager to buy it from you and make it their own. But what if you’re moving out of one giant 100,000 square foot room? In her book Big Box Reuse , and accompanying photographic exhibition, Julia Christensen takes us on a road trip across America to look at what becomes of the spaces superstores leave behind when they move out. These warehouse-like buildings have found their place in the built landscape since the first Wal-Mart, Kmart and Target stores opened in 1962. Since the spring of 2004, Christensen has driven over 75,000 miles, visiting converted “big boxes” and meeting the people who are transforming these massive shells into useful structures for their community. She has documented what happened to the structures, the parking lots, and the surrounding communities. She has found out who wanted to reuse the buildings, why and how. What Christensen has discovered is that examining the big box building provides a wealth of information that will help us steer the future of our landscape with more informed decision-making processes. Among the things Big Box Reuse points out: despite the harmful construction of the big box, reuse is a powerful tool in the fight against the increasing dangers of sprawl. For every building that is reused, a new one does not go up; a monumental victory, as the National Trust for Historic Preservation recently indicated the energy used to destroy older buildings in addition to the energy used to build new ones could power the entire state of California for 10 years (LA Times, October 2008). From churches, retail stores and charter schools to a courthouse, senior center and the Spam museum, Big Box Reuse shows the many practical reuses of buildings that initially seemed suited for one function. Renovations are nearly complete in The Green Building, home to The Green
Building Gallery. The 110- year old former dry goods store, houses a contemporary art gallery, office space, event spaces, and a restaurant, 732 Social.

SOME LIKE IT HOT
3 artists from Flame Run Gallery
Nov 2 - Dec 13, 2008
Sara Shallenberger Brown and Mezzanine Lobbies

Flame Run's goal is to share the endless possibilities of contemporary glass art with the public. From our art glass studio and art glass gallery tours, hot glass demonstrations, contemporary glass art exhibitions, and community classes to visiting artists’ workshops, Flame Run has put Louisville on the map as a destination for contemporary glass artists, educators and collectors. Flame Run is about seeing, feeling and experiencing the passion of our glass artists. At Flame Run the focus is glass.

Brook Forrest White, Jr., co-owner of Flame Run Glass Studio in Louisville, invests himself in the magic and mystery of hot glass. He creates colorful, seductive forms with patterning that takes the viewer to another dimension.

Susie Slabaugh White’s work explores the coupling of seductive form and radiant color with narrative images of her life. She use a collaboration of methods in an inventive way to get the desired results. Through this process, the energy trapped in the glass is fused with her energy found deep within. From sweat to substance, it is both meditative and exciting.

Anessa Arehart's Beauty Paintings are loosely based on lessons learned from her Grandmother, Lena. Balanced with a good dose of modern practicality and a bit of humor, Anessa strives to keep a few basic rules alive in regards to Lena's personal standards of beauty, charm and poise. She believes it doesn't hurt to give a little nod of respect to tradition now and again and encourages a wee bit of decorum while swinging from the chandelier. Or at the very least, to be wearing a proper slip when doing so.

The Art of Experience: Fluxus Works from the Collection of Michael Lowe
November 7, 2008 – January 3, 2009

The exhibition will feature over 60 exemplary Fluxus pieces owned by Cincinnati art collector Michael Lowe. Fluxus was a dynamic network of international visual artists, composers, and poets who collaborated beginning in the early 1960s. They created individual and collective artworks that emphasized elements of chance, economy (both in materials and presentation), experiential engagement, humor, play, and a democratization of media that combined poetry, theater, music, and art. Out of these interests, Fluxus artists invented such forms as the Event score and Fluxkit multiples, in addition to the terms Concept Art and Intermedia. The working dates for the most prominent activity by original Fluxus artists are 1962-1978, and their work has influenced everything from conceptual art and mail art to performance and postmodernism. Founding Fluxus artists continue to create, perform, and publish to this very day, inspiring new generations of artists who have unabashedly adopted the Fluxus name and its principles. Fluxus artists represented in the exhibition include: Yoko Ono, George Brecht, George Maciunas, Bob Watts, Takako Saito, Robert Filliou, Ben Vautier, Henry Flynt, Nam June Paik, Ay-O, and Wolf Vostell.

ART ECOLOGY is at 224 South Clay Street unit #110 at the new Gallery Square development.
ART ECOLOGY brings a twist to the “gallery” concept by offering reproductions of the original work with their in house printing capabilities.
