Trolley Hop FAQ
What is the First Friday Trolley Hop?
It's an art show. It's a tourist attraction. It's a street party. It's a celebration of downtown Louisville that is bringing new visitors and new life to the Main and Market corridor.

The First Friday Trolley Hop is all of that because of the vision of a committed group of people who believed in downtown and had faith in the drawing power of Louisville's art community.

The Trolley Hop got its start in 2001, when a group of artists and art gallery owners on Main and Market Streets suggested using TARC's historic trolleys to connect the increasing number of galleries in the downtown district then known as the "Art Zone." Because so many galleries were scheduling art openings and events on the First Friday of each month, it seemed natural to use the trolleys as transportation and a great marketing tool.

In December 2001, the First Friday Trolley Hop was launched. Despite minimal fanfare or promotion, it met with immediate success. The initial event, which ferried gallery-goers from 9th Street to Clay along Main and Market Streets, attracted 271 riders in spite of winter weather. The number of riders grew each month and more galleries and shops stayed open late and staged events. Now it is not unusual for over 3,000 people to attend a typical Trolley Hop.
When is the First Friday Trolley Hop?
The First Friday Trolley Hop takes place on the first Friday of each month from 5-11 p.m., rain or shine. Most of the galleries close around 9 p.m. but the restaurants, clubs, and shops stay open later. The trolleys run until 11 p.m.
